The base install consists of a kernel, bash, some network utilities and a great package manager called Pacman. They also host a repository of many useful, stable, open source software packages that pacman can grab. Pacman does everything; Checks for conficts, puts configuration files in the /etc directory, and installs the binaries in the appropriate locations (/usr/bin or /usr/sbin). You can even use pacman to update the kernel! Then you may visit this custom writing service

There are lots of great distributions out there, this is just another. There is also a "Live-CD" version, called Archie being developed that can run from CD or USB, similar to Knoppix and others.
