Synopsis

"SHOW AND TELL" - Everyone is welcome to come and give a small presentation on what you have been doing lately (last few months or years even) with Linux and Open Source. No matter how big or how small, here is your chance to show everyone how you spend your time with your favorite operating system. There will be a computer there that will be hooked up to the network and allow you to demonstrate whatever you need. If you have special requirements for your presentation, please let me know.

Post meeting summary

  • Mark showed Cedega Wine running SimCity 4 and Imagine (3d program) under Linux to get the meeting started.
  • David talked about how Linux is used in the Library.
  • Jeff showed the Wiki for the IU Linux Special Interest Group and IU Linux Distribution that they are working on. (If you are interested in participating in this, which I would encourage, please check out: http://www.iub.edu/~linuxsig/pmwiki/index.php/Main/IULinux or contact Jeff Welty (jtwelty (at) indiana (dot) edu)) A Emacs vs. Vi war also erupted during this period.
  • Ben talked about how he is experimenting with LVM and also how he's working on configuring Apache to avoid the Insight server detection police.
  • Bob talked about doing backups under Linux using rsync and backing up to disk instead of tape.
  • Anna has successfully made the switch to Linux and has been using it for a year now. She's having trouble with system sound events under KDE though, I told her she should ask her question on the mailing list so we could look into it more.
  • Christoph got us all talking about Python, indentation and command line calculators.
  • Chris gave an excellent presentation on the work he is doing to create a Tibetan translation of open source software like Gnome, KDE, etc.
  • Don talked about the Cesium Beam Atomic Clock and his own psuedo-shell that he wrote in DOS and wants to convert to BASH.
  • Richard talked about his Linux machine that is in his storage closet. ;-)
  • And Paul mentioned that he only uses Linux to learn how to install Linux. ;-)

After it all, people chatted for a while. I think it went quite well and I'm excited because BLUG is starting to snowball.
