Synopsis

How many of you are having difficulties... No, no, I meant with the thing in front of your head/legs. The computer. Or more specifically, you're having problems with Linux or some related software. Well now is your chance to bring your problem in front of the group so that we can all help you. Bask in the glow of the spotlight and feel the good hearts of those around you as they share their knowledge and help you.

You are welcome to bring your computer, no matter how big or small to this meeting and ask for help. We can either install Linux on it, help you get past a problems you have.

Or if you don't bring your computer, write down a problem that you've had and bring it before the group. We'll have a laptop on hand for people who need to use/abuse a program.

Post meeting summary

A pretty good turn out. About 7 people brought computers in. Only 4 of them needed problems fixed. Tom Garlock, who had just been introduced to Linux at the class Mark Krenz gave at the library back on September 15th, brough his computer in. Tom had just installed Ubuntu and was having trouble with keystrokes and mouse clicks taking up to 30 seconds to register. With a great tip from Bill Worden, we fixed the probem by disabling power management and APCI in the system BIOS. It was fine afterwords.

Chris Ellis was having trouble booting his new Gentoo system after trying to use the reiserfs. He later found out that he had enabled the reiserfs module but forgot to run make modules_install. ;-) It happens.

Christoph is having trouble getting his external VGA port on his laptop to work right. Trying a few different tests didn't yield any solution. Maybe he should have a look at http://www.x.org/X11R6.8.2/doc/i810.4.html and try some of the different options in the Device section of his xorg.conf. Update: Christoph tried some of the techniques on the website above and they worked. Now almost all his laptop issues are fixed. :-)

At the beginning of the meeting Mark talked about taking BLUG into the next phase, creating a non-profit corporation in order to allow for better funding through donations, etc. He also mentioned a few potential ways of raising money to do these things. There will be more on this website about all this soon.
